Sunrise Smarty Scores Fall Highweight
Facing a reduced field of four other foes, four-year-old SUNRISE SMARTY (Smarty Jones) captured his first black-type win with a front-running performance in the $100,000 Fall Highweight Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct on Thanksgiving Day. The bay colt broke a touch slow from the inside post position, hustled to set a blistering early pace of :21 2/5 for the first quarter, then :44 1/5 and :56 4/5 while in the clear before holding off late challenges to stop the clock in 1:09 4/5 for six furlongs over the good main track. The Seattle Slew grandson, who toted 130 pounds, was a half-length in front of his nearest competitor.
Flat Bold (Flatter), who kept the heat on the winner early, finished third.
Sunrise Smarty now has a 12-4-3-1 career line and earnings of more than $190,000. Last year, he finished second in the Groovy Stakes, and earlier this year, he ran second in the Duck Dance Stakes.
Bred in Kentucky, Sunrise Smarty is the second foal from Seattle Slew's winning daughter Sunrise Slew. The 11-year-old broodmare is the dam of yearling and weanling fillies by Cowtown Cat (Distorted Humor).
Congratulations to Sunrise Smarty, owners West Point Thoroughbreds, B C Stables and Nick Cammarano, trainer Mike Hushion, jockey Ramon Dominguez and the rest of the colt's connections. The Slew Crew wishes you continued success.
