8/3/15 - Rachel's Valentina Impresses in Debut

RACHEL'S VALENTINA — the two-year-old daughter of two Preakness Stakes (G1) winners — made a stunning debut at Saratoga on Aug. 2, defeating seven other young fillies in the process.

Sired by champion Bernardini (A.P. Indy) and out of Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro), the Seattle Slew great-granddaughter overcame a slow start and a five-wide run around the far turn to challenge the pacesetter down the lane. Gaining the lead late in the stretch, Rachel's Valentina's speed carried her to a two-length advantage at the line. She ran the six furlongs in 1:10 1/5 over the fast track. The m... [more]

6/7/14 - Tonalist Amazes in Belmont; Three of Top Five Related to Slew

When TONALIST (Tapit) romped in the Peter Pan Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park one week after California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) won the Kentucky Derby (G1), few may have guessed that the bay colt conditioned by a "turf" trainer would come back one month later in his second stakes attempt and battle for a classic victory. The brilliant colt did just that, though, in the 146th renewal of the Belmont Stakes (G1) and was once again followed across the wire by Commissioner (A.P. Indy), the Peter Pan runner-up, who this time was only a head back in second after setting most of the pace in the marathon $1.5 million test on June 7.

5/17/14 - California Chrome Unstoppable in Preakness

Seattle Slew's great-great-grandson CALIFORNIA CHROME (Lucky Pulpit) captured the second jewel of the Triple Crown May 17 with an impressive victory in the $1.5 million Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico and earned the right to stand on the edge of glory. In three weeks, he'll have a chance to run in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and see if he has what it takes to become the 12th Triple Crown winner.

The flashy chestnut colt broke near flawlessly from post number 3 and used some early speed to clear most of his nine competitors before passing the finish line for the first time. Settling as he headed to the first turn, Cal... [more]

5/11/14 - Imagining Wires Man o'War Foes for First Grade 1

Regally bred IMAGINING (Giant's Causeway) captured his first Grade 1 event on May 11 when he led every step of the way to win the $400,000 Man o'War Stakes (G1) by three-quarters-of-a-length.

The six-year-old horse faced off against five other turf stars in the well-regarded test. Breaking well, Imagining and a pair of challengers took off for the lead, with the eventual winner maintaining a slight lead. He cruised through an opening quarter-mile in :23 4/5 and then slowed his tempo down to record splits of :49, 1:13 3/5 and 1:38. Challenged again in the stretch, the chestnut horse refused to back down as he ran 1... [more]

5/11/14 - Fiftyshadesofhay Back to Winning with Late Ruffian Surge

Four-year-old FIFTYSHADESOFHAY (Pulpit) won her first test in 10 months with a powerful closing kick that propelled her to the front just in time to take the $250,000 Ruffian Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park on May 11.

The bay filly raced well back off an early wicked pace and began to show some interest in the final turn. While Grade 1 winner Grace Hall (Empire Maker), who descends from Seattle Slew on her dam's side, was doing her best to catch the leader down the stretch after a year on the sidelines, Fiftyshadesofhay was still working to find her best stride. Grace Hall collared the pacesetter in the final furlong,... [more]
