1/20/14 - Spellbound Finishes Strongly to Win La Canada

Four-year-old SPELLBOUND (Bernardini) left herself a lot to do down the Santa Anita Park stretch but that didn't keep the filly from winning her first stakes in a dramatic finish Jan. 19 in the $200,000 La Canada Stakes (G2).

Facing six other four-year-old fillies, Spellbound spent most of the race trailing the field by a considerable distance. Asked to start her run in the far turn, she sailed around the final turn four- or five-wide with four ladies still in front of her. The bay filly continued increasing her pace, though, in the middle of track and closed the gap with every stride. Rapidly approaching the wire... [more]

1/20/14 - Shakin It Up Powers to Strub Victory

Fresh off a win in the Malibu Stakes (G1) late last month, four-year-old SHAKIN IT UP (Midnight Lute) captured his first two-turn stakes impressively with a 2 1/4-length victory in the $200,000 Strub Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park Jan. 18.

The dark bay/brown colt broke sharply and then settled into a good tracking position on the rail. Running in third or fourth for much of the race, he switched to the outside to race at least three-wide in the final turn and came into the top of the lane full of run. Shakin It Up swept to the lead and powered away from his competition to cross the finish line in front of seven o... [more]

1/20/14 - Royal Delta Honored as Three-Time Champion

For the third year in a row, ROYAL DELTA (Empire Maker) was named a champion for her accomplishments on the track. The champion three-year-old filly of 2011, Seattle Slew's great-granddaughter was named the 2012 champion older female after her four-year-old campaign. Her success in 2013 led to a repeat of that honor on Jan. 18 during the 43rd Annual Eclipse Awards.

Royal Delta began her five-year-old season with an easy win in the Sabin Stakes (G3). An unsuccessful trip to Dubai to face the world's best in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) was followed by a brief freshening before she finished second in the Fleur de Li... [more]

1/20/14 - Noble Moon Stretches Out to Win the Jerome

The cold temperatures didn't slow down NOBLE MOON (Malibu Moon) too much in his three-year-old debut Jan. 4. Facing seven other sophomores in the $200,000 Jerome Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct, the bay colt took command before running a half-mile and pulled away late in the stretch for a two-length victory in his first stakes score.

Noble Moon broke from the inside post and secured a spot on the rail for the early going. Taking over on the backstretch, the colt had plenty of company around the final turn and into the stretch, but finally shook clear late for the daylight win. He completed one mile and 70 yards in an easy... [more]

1/20/14 - Awesome Baby Leads the Way in Santa Ynez

Newly turned three-year-old AWESOME BABY (Awesome Again) made a successful return to the track after a three-month freshening with a win in the $200,000 Santa Ynez Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park Jan. 4.

The dark bay/brown filly broke alertly and took off for the lead, where she was joined on her inside by Taste Like Candy (Candy Ride [Arg]). The pair raced together down the backstretch with Awesome Baby recording fractions of :21 3/5 and :44 2/5. Breaking free of her competition around the final turn, the winning lass opened up a nice advantage down the stretch and then held off a resurging Taste Like Candy for t... [more]
