6/7/14 - Tonalist Amazes in Belmont; Three of Top Five Related to Slew

When TONALIST (Tapit) romped in the Peter Pan Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park one week after California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) won the Kentucky Derby (G1), few may have guessed that the bay colt conditioned by a "turf" trainer would come back one month later in his second stakes attempt and battle for a classic victory. The brilliant colt did just that, though, in the 146th renewal of the Belmont Stakes (G1) and was once again followed across the wire by Commissioner (A.P. Indy), the Peter Pan runner-up, who this time was only a head back in second after setting most of the pace in the marathon $1.5 million test on June 7.

5/17/14 - California Chrome Unstoppable in Preakness

Seattle Slew's great-great-grandson CALIFORNIA CHROME (Lucky Pulpit) captured the second jewel of the Triple Crown May 17 with an impressive victory in the $1.5 million Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico and earned the right to stand on the edge of glory. In three weeks, he'll have a chance to run in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and see if he has what it takes to become the 12th Triple Crown winner.

The flashy chestnut colt broke near flawlessly from post number 3 and used some early speed to clear most of his nine competitors before passing the finish line for the first time. Settling as he headed to the first turn, Cal... [more]

5/4/14 - California Chrome Is All Class in Derby; Commanding Curve Runs Second

It was a weekend for favorites and impressive runs under Churchill Downs' Twin Spires as first Untapable (Tapit) won the Kentucky Oaks (G1) on Friday and then CALIFORNIA CHROME (Lucky Pulpit) soared to victory in $2 million Kentucky Derby (G1) on Saturday, May 3. The chestnut colt, decorated with liberal doses of white on all four legs and his face, turned in a memorable performance worthy of the prerace hype to earn a blanket of red roses and a place in the history books.

Lined up alongside 18 other sophomores in the Run for the Roses, California Chrome broke nearly perfectly from the fifth post. Charging forward... [more]

5/4/14 - Untapable Undeniable in Kentucky Oaks

In front of a crowd of more than 113,000, heavily favored UNTAPABLE (Tapit) ran the race everyone was hoping for and then some as she powered to a 4 1/2-length victory in the $1 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) on May 2. The Seattle Slew great-great-granddaughter remains unbeaten in 2014 with the impressive win, which was only four hundredths of a second off the Oaks record.

The minutes before the Run for the Lilies were anything but ideal for the 13 lasses lined up for their run at history. One filly was scratched after flipping in the starting gate and was fortunately uninjured. After the remaining 12 were resettled a... [more]

3/31/14 - Constitution Wins Florida Derby Battle

Lightly raced CONSTITUTION (Tapit) made his stakes debut March 29 against seven other sophomores in the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) and proved tough enough with a hard-fought neck victory in Gulfstream Park's biggest Kentucky Derby (G1) prep.

The bay colt broke well and then began his journey around the track on the inside. Racing on the rail with company to his outside, Constitution was a little rank and seemed displeased to be stuck in that position. But his place on the track eventually paid off, and he settled while running down the backstretch. When the pacesetter went a little wide in the final turn, Const... [more]
