4/3/13 - Slew City Slew (1984 – 2013)

Multiple Grade 1 winner and top sire SLEW CITY SLEW died April 3 at the age of 29. The fantastic son of Seattle Slew stood his entire career at Airdrie Stud near Versailles, Kentucky, and has been buried near his paddock at the farm.

A millionaire on the racetrack, Slew City Slew won the Oaklawn Handicap (G1) and Gulfstream Park Handicap (G1) at five and the Salvator Mile Handicap (G3) and Polynesian Handicap, in track record time, at four. During his career, he also ran second in the Donn Handicap (G1) and Widener Handicap (G1) and ran both second and third in the Meadowlands Cup Handicap (G1). In total, he made 42 starts, won 11 races, finished second 10 times and crossed the line in third six times for owners Joe Allen and Tayhill Stable.

At stud, Slew City Slew was known as a value in Kentucky but consistently sired tough, durable winners. His most successful runner is multiple Grade 1 winner Lava Man, who captured the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) three consecutive times as well as back-to-back runnings of Santa Anita Handicap (G1). Slew City Slew also sired Canadian Horse of the Year Win City, Grade 1 winner Sis City, multiple Grade 2 winner City By Night, Grade 2 winner Evansville Slew and millionaire Maysville Slew.

Pensioned from stallion duty after the 2011 breeding season, Slew City Slew is the sire of 55 stakes winner, 774 starters and 571 winners to date.

The Slew Crew thanks Airdrie Stud staff for providing Slew City Slew such a wonderful home.
