Take Charge Indy Roars to Alysheba Victory
Two races before the Kentucky Oaks (G1), four-year-old TAKE CHARGE INDY (A.P. Indy) overwhelmed eight rivals, storming to a six-length victory in the $300,000 Alysheba Stakes (G2) under the Twin Spires.
Breaking sharply and shooting clear in the opening strides, the dark bay/brown colt then settled into second and maintained that position down the backstretch. Sweeping to the front leaving the far turn, Take Charge Indy clocked six furlongs in 1:12 2/5 and quickly accelerated away from the field at the top of the lane. Racing past a mile in 1:35 2/5, Take Charge Indy thundered to the wire for the visually impressive score. The Grade 1 winner completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:41 2/5 over the fast Churchill Downs main track.
Take Charge Indy, winner of last year's Florida Derby (G1), now has three wins, four runner-up efforts and two third-place finishes from 12 career starts and has earned more than $1 million. Sidelined last year for surgery on an ankle chip, the colt returned to the races last fall, finishing second in the Clark Handicap (G1). Earlier this year, he ran third in the Donn Handicap (G1) and second in the Skip Away Stakes (G3).
Foaled in the Bluegrass State, Take Charge Indy is out of multiple Grade 1 winner Take Charge Lady (Dehere).
Congratulations to Take Charge Indy; owners WinStar Farm and Chuck and Maribeth Sandford; breeder Eaton Sales; trainer Pat Byrne; jockey Rosie Napravnik and the rest of the colt's connections. The Slew Crew wishes you continued success.
