6/29/10 - Concord Point Lowers Iowa Derby Mark

Three-year-old CONCORD POINT (Tapit), who boasts Seattle Slew on both sides of his family tree, won his first stakes race on June 26 with a track record star turn in the $250,0000 Iowa Derby (G3). Stalking the early pace, the gray/roan colt took command in the second turn to clock six furlongs in 1:09 3/5 and drew away to record one mile in 1:34 before crossing under the wire 8 1/2 lengths in front. He completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:40 1/5 over the fast Prairie Meadows track.

Thiskyhasnolimit (Sky Mesa) closed from off the pace to finish second.

Concord Point entered the Iowa Derby off a runner-up effort in the Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes (G3) and now has three wins from five starts. He has earned more than $225,000 in his short career.

Bred in Kentucky, Concord Point is a great-great-grandson of Seattle Slew through his sire, Tapit (Pulpit). The sophomore colt is also a great-great-grandson of Seattle Slew through his dam, Harve de Grace (Boston Harbor). Harve de Grace is also the dam of the unraced juvenile colt Spin Zone (Candy Ride [Arg]), an unnamed yearling colt by Van Nistelrooy (Storm Cat) and a Political Force (Unbridled's Song) colt born this spring.

The Slew Crew congratulates Concord Point, owner Kaleem Shah, breeders Lee McMillin and Ed Rudley, trainer Bob Baffert, jockey Martin Garcia and the rest of the colt's connections. Best wishes for future successes.
