Happy Belmont Day
Slew, 49 years ago, on June11,1977, you were about to make racing history and prove all your doubters wrong.
You loved Belmont Park. You were stabled at Belmont. You won the Champagne Stakes there as a two year old (in a time of 1:34 2/5!). Belmont Park was home.
You hadn't run on a muddy track, though, and Belmont day it was muddy.
We were all anxiously waiting in the paddock. Billy was late. Finally after a couple calls, you arrived with Billy, Mike Kennedy and Chet Taylor.
You didn't disappoint those waiting for you as you burst into your "War Dance." You were a true New Yorker. You were all business and ready for any challenge.
We knew you were a champion with heart and energy. And we knew how fast you were and how you trained. You knew your destiny. God willing, I knew you could reach that destiny. But just before the wire, Jean Cruguet stood up in his stirrups and raised his whip. Everyone was cheering for you. We were so unbelievably proud of you (and very thankful Jean hadn't fallen off).
On your Belmont Day, you became the only undefeated Triple Crown winner.
We celebrated with family and friends at Fasig-Tipton.
We thanked God for you, Seattle Slew, and for letting us be a part of your life.
Your legacy lives on. You have six progeny in the Belmont. We wish them luck.
We love you always.
God Bless you, Seattle Slew
Karen and Mickey
