2/15/26 - Happy Birthday, Seattle Slew

Slew, fifty-two years ago on this day, at 7 p.m., you were foaled at Ben Castleman's White Horse Acres Farm.

You had a destiny.

At Fasig-Tipton the next year, on July 19, I had to elbow Mickey so you, Hip 128, the first foal out of My Charmer and by Bold Reasoning, would become ours. Mickey had dog-eared your catalog page because of all the two-year-old winners in your pedigree. You had me when you burst out of your stall with your powerful walk. I saw your War Dance for the first time and you gave me your eye. We had such a connection.

From that day, Mickey always put your interests and well-being first. You have been in our hearts always since that day.

You showed your speed in the Champagne Stakes (G1) at two.You were the first undefeated Triple Crown winner at three. You beat Affirmed in the Marlboro Cup (G1) — in the first, and so far only, meeting of two Triple Crown winners — at four.

You are a champion.

Your legacy, your progeny, will forever be part of the Thoroughbred world.

For us, you are remembered for your heart, your speed, your independence, your love of having no one in front of you, your War Dance, your determination to do things "Slew's Way," and for your eye that showed us your soul and also put fear in any rival who dared to be in your way. We remember your love of music, apples and roses; the love you gave and the memories you left with us.

You were a gift from heaven. We thank God for you.

Happy Birthday, Slew. God bless you.

Love,

Karen & Mickey
