5/17/25 - Journalism Proves Mettle in 150th Preakness; Margie's Intention Wins Black-Eyed Susan

Forced to deal with traffic issues early and a serious incident at the top of the stretch, and racing back two weeks after finishing second with a strong performance in the Kentucky Derby (G1) over a tiring sloppy track, JOURNALISM (Curlin) had many reasons not to cross the finish line first in the Preakness Stakes (G1). But the bay colt showed the world what he was made of at Pimlico when he captured the $2 million second leg of the Triple Crown with determined heart and fortitude.

Racing on the inside early in mid-pack with few options to change his position, Journalism was urged on to stay in touch with the leading group down the backstretch. An opening on the inside appeared as Journalism was rounding the bend and he charged for it, only to have a lightly raced competitor change in and try to cut off his spot. Journalism lost momentum but refused to back down, fighting to hold his lane and his chance at a solid finish. Longshot Gosger (Nyquist) had taken the lead and was running away with the race down the stretch while fellow Derby competitor and closer Sandman (Tapit) was making his move in the middle of the track. The race appeared to be Gosger's with Journalism finding his best stride again to keep Sandman at bay. But with the wire fast approaching, Journalism found a huge burst of speed to accelerate more and catch Gosger as well.

Journalism crossed the line a half-length in front of Gosger, who is out of a Tapit mare, with Sandman another 2 1/4 lengths back in third, providing Seattle Slew with a Preakness trifecta of descendants. The final time for the 1 3/16-mile classic was 1:55 2/5 over a fast racing surface.

Bred in Kentucky by Don Alberto Corporation, Journalism was produced from a Grade 2 winner who herself is out of a Bernardini (A.P. Indy) mare. The colt is now owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Robert LaPenta, Elayne Stables 5, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith. He is trained by Michael McCarthy and was ridden by regular rider Umberto Rispoli. Journalism has won five of his seven starts, including the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and two Grade 2 contests.

The Slew Crew congratulates Journalism and his entire team. We wish you continued success.

The day before the Preakness, storms delayed the start of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) for three-year-old fillies by more than an hour, but those storms did not stop favored Margie's Intention (Honor A.P.) from finding the winner's circle. Finishing third was Kinzie Queen (McKinzie). Both fillies boast Slew on both side of their pedigrees. Margie's Intention's sire line goes straight to Seattle Slew while her third dam is by Capote. Kinzie Queen's sire descends from Slew through his second dam Ticket to Houston (Houston) while the filly herself is out of a Mineshaft mare.

Margie's Intention captured the Black-Eyed Susan by three-quarters-of-a-length. She completed 1 1/8 miles over the sloppy and sealed Pimlico track in 1:52. Bred in Louisiana by Coteau Grove Farms, Margie's Intention is owned by Baron Stable and WinStar Farm, is trained by Brad Cox and was ridden to victory by jockey Flavien Prat. Congratulations and best wishes for more successes from the Slew Crew.
