9/1/11 - Slew's Saga Represented by First Stakes Winner

Slew's Saga (Seattle Slew), winner of Woodbine's Cup and Saucer Stakes at two, got his first winner and stakes winner in one perfect package. Two-year-old SWEET SAGA broke her maiden while winning the $50,000 Barbara Shinpoch Stakes at Emerald Downs on Aug. 28.

The bay filly raced well off the pace for the first six furlongs and launched her move on the outside in the second turn. Angling out more in the stretch, she found another gear and wore down the pacesetter late to gain the lead in time. Crossing the wire a half-length in front, Sweet Saga ran one mile in 1:36 4/5 over the fast main track. Sweet Saga was making her third start after finishing third in her first two outings.

Sweet Saga was bred in Washington and is the first foal out of Cielo Dulce (Cahill Road).

Freshman sire Slew's Saga, who raced in Karen and Mickey Taylor's silks, earned $252,649 during his time on the track. The nine-year-old stallion, who was also bred by Karen and Mickey Taylor, is from the second-to-last crop of his legendary sire. He stands at Oakhurst Thoroughbreds near Newberg, Oregon.
