A.P. Indy Pensioned
Seattle Slew's Horse of the Year son A.P. INDY has been retired from stallion duties. A champion on the track and in the breeding shed, A.P. Indy — like his sire — has left a permanent and impressive mark on the breed.
Sold for $2.9 million, A.P. Indy was the highest-priced yearling purchased at auction in 1990, and he earned back every penny and then some on the track. The bay colt earned $2,979,815 from just 11 career starts. A Grade 1 winner two and three, A.P. Indy's stakes wins came in the 1991 Hollywood Futurity (G1) and the 1992 San Rafael Stakes (G2), Santa Anita Derby (G1), Peter Pan Stakes (G2), Belmont Stakes (G1) and Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). He also ran third in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1). A.P. Indy missed his chance in the Kentucky Derby (G1) when he was scratched the morning of the race due to a cracked quarter. A.P. Indy entered stud at Lane's End, the farm he was raised on, after the Breeders' Cup Classic, retiring with an 11-8-0-1 career line. He was named champion three-year-old and Horse of the Year for 1992.
Again like his sire, A.P. Indy was almost immediately successful at stud. From his first crop, A.P. Indy sired Grade 1 winners Tomisue's Delight, Runup the Colors and Royal Indy as well as Grade 2 winner Pulpit. To date, A.P. Indy has sired 10 champions, including North American Horse of the Year Mineshaft and United Arab Emirates Horse of the Year Festival of Light. Other champions include Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Bernardini, Belmont Stakes-winning filly Rags to Riches, Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) victress Tempera, two-time older champion male in Canada Marchfield, champion older female in Canada Serenading, champion three-year-old in Canada Eye of the Leopard, champion two-year-old filly in Canada Catch the Thrill, and Ecuadorian champion older male Gabriel's Hill. Through mid-April, A.P. Indy had already sired 136 stakes winners.
While Bernardini and Mineshaft are two of A.P. Indy's younger sons quickly turning out top runners, A.P. Indy's other Grade 1-winning sons leaving their mark in the breeding shed include Stephen Got Even and Friends Lake. Malibu Moon, another son of A.P. Indy only won one of two career starts, has already sired a champion in Declan's Moon and five other Grade 1 winners. Pulpit, a proven sire of sires, seems posed to continue his sire and grandsire's line.
As a broodmare sire, A.P. Indy has also succeeded wonderfully. In addition to this year's Kentucky Oak (G1) winner, A.P. Indy is the broodmare sire of champion Wait a While (Maria's Mon), last year's Kentucky Derby victor Super Saver (Maria's Mon), young stallions Any Given Sunday (Distorted Humor) and Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat), Tomisue's Delight's son Mr. Sidney (Storm Cat) and recent Carter Handicap (G1) winner Morning Line (Tiznow).
Twenty-two-year-old A.P. Indy failed to impregnate any mares this year, thus his last crop of foals arrived this spring.
A.P. Indy was produced from multiple Grade 3 winner Weekend Surprise (Secretariat).
The Slew Crew wishes A.P. Indy a very long, well-deserved retirement at Lane's End. May his sons and daughters continue to carry on his and Seattle Slew's legacy.
