Happy Derby Day, Slew
Slew, on May 7, we will celebrate your Derby win 49 years ago. And, on the same day, we will remember saying goodbye 24 years ago as you left us to race in Heaven.
In our hearts, we always knew you were the best and knew you had a destiny. You came into the Kentucky Derby undefeated and had won the Champagne Stakes the year before in record time. You had such speed and heart. You loved to race and toy with your opponents. And you always wanted to be in front.
They tried to stop you the night before and in the gate, but you would overcome all obstacles.
As Chic Anderson announced "Seattle Slew breaks slowly," you were already bullying your way to be in front as you passed under the finish line the first time. Nearing the top of the stretch, you looked For The Moment in the eye before leaving him behind. And the rest is history. You overcame so many obstacles to be unmatched. You fulfilled your destiny and made us so proud.
Your progeny carry on your legacy today. And many will compete at Churchill Downs this weekend, and we will cheer them on.
Enjoy your roses; you have earned them beyond all measure. We miss you always and have wonderful memories from all our time with you and watching all that you accomplished.
God Bless you, Seattle Slew. We love you.
Karen and Mickey
