11/8/20 - Eight Breeders' Cup Winners for Slew

A total of 14 Breeders Cup World Championship races were held at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, on Friday Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7, and at the end of the event, eight of the winners descended for the unmatched Seattle Slew.

The Slew Crew congratulates the winners and their connections on the wonderful victories and performances.

Beginning the championship races on the right foot on Friday was GOLDEN PAL, who took the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2) over 13 competitors. The two-year-old bay colt is out Lady Shipman, whose sire Midshipman won the 2008 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) and finished third in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) the following year. Midshipman is out of multiple Grade 2 winner Fleet Lady (Avenue of Flags). A granddaughter of Seattle Slew, Fleet Lady produced Grade 2 winner Fast Cookie, who is the dam of multiple Grade 1 winner and freshman sire Frosted (Tapit) and Grade 3 winner Indulgent (Bernardini). Golden Pal's dam is out of Sumthingtotalkabt, who is by Mutakddim — the sire of more than 100 stakes winners and also a grandson of Seattle Slew.

In the next event, FIRE AT WILL captured the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) by three lengths over 13 other two-year-olds. The young colt is out of Flirt, whose third dam is Grade 1 winner Hail Atlantis. The daughter of Seattle Slew produced two stakes winners, including Stormy Atlantic, who has sired more than 100 stakes winners to date.

VEQUIST, who is out of the Mineshaft (A.P. Indy) mare Vero Amore, won the next race when she crossed the finish line two lengths in front in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Friday's races culminated with the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), which was won by ESSENTIAL QUALITY. The gray/roan colt is by leading sire Tapit (Pulpit), who is a great-grandson of Seattle Slew. Essential Quality crossed the finish line three-quarters-of-a-length in front of Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow), who also descends from Slew.

When the Breeders' Cup events began again on Saturday, a pair of speedy fillies kicked things off on the right note. Three-year-old GAMINE, whose second dam is Seattle Splash (Chief Seattle), outran four-year-old Serengeti Empress (Alternation), who features Slew on both sides of her pedigree, to take the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1).

Four-year-old KNICKS GO (Paynter) easily outran 11 others to win the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1). Paynter, who overcame serious illnesses while racing, is out of Tizso, a full sister to Horse of the Year and champion Tiznow and multiple Grade 2 winner Budroyale, making Paynter a great-great-grandson of Seattle Slew.

Fourth time was the charm for seven-year-old WHITMORE, who won the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) after finishing on the board the last two years. Produced from Melody's Spirit, Whitmore's third dam is the Seattle Slew mare Ten Flags.

MONOMOY GIRL (Tapizar), who boasts Slew on both sides of her pedigree, finished out the victories for Seattle Slew runners with a triumphant return to the winner's circle in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1). After winning the event in 2018 and being named that year's champion three-year-old filly, Monomoy Girl underwent colic surgery in 2019 and then suffered a gluteal strain, which prevented her from racing last year. She returned to her winning ways in 2020, taking the Ruffian Stakes (G2) and La Troienne Stakes (G1), before capping off her racing career with another Distaff victory. She crossed the wire first, ahead of Valiance (Tapit) and Dunbar Road, who is out of a Bernardini mare, in second and third. By the Tapit stallion Tapizar, who won the 2012 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, Monomoy Girl also descends from Slew through her second dam, Endless Parade, who is by Williamstown (Seattle Slew).
