Cathryn Sophia Earns Oaks Lilies
Before a record Kentucky Oaks (G1) day crowd, CATHRYN SOPHIA (Street Boss) won the day's signature event while leading two other Seattle Slew-related fillies across the wire for a fantastic trifecta.
A full field of 14 fillies lined up for the $1 million Kentucky Oaks. Cathryn Sophia, who was coming off the first loss of her career, broke well and then settled into a stalking position in fourth behind the pacesetters. She maintained her position down the backstretch and then launched her bid in the final turn. Sweeping into the stretch four-wide, the bay filly would not be denied as she charged to the front and remained unchallenged down the lane. Cathryn Sophia crossed under the wire 2 3/4 lengths in front of Land Over Sea (Bellamy Road) who finished in second, a neck ahead of Lewis Bay (Bernardini). The final time for the 1 1/8-mile feature was 1:50 2/5 over the fast Churchill Downs track.
Both Cathryn Sophia and Land Over Sea boast Seattle Slew on their dams' sides. Land Over Sea is out of Belle Waiting (Pulpit).
Cathryn Sophia was foaled in Maryland and is the first foal out of Sheave (Mineshaft), an unraced seven-year-old mare. Sheave is also the dam of the unraced two-year-old filly Great Craic (Bullsbay), whose pedigree shows Seattle Slew on both the top and bottom, a yearling filly by Denman (Aus) and a Bullsbay filly born earlier this year.
Cathryn Sophia has won five of six starts. Earlier this year, she won the Forward Gal Stakes (G2) before taking the Davona Dale Stakes (G2). She finished third in the Ashland Stakes (G1) prior to her Oaks win. With the winner's share of the Oaks' purse, Cathryn Sophia has earned more than $900,000. The filly could make her next start in the June 11 Acorn Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park.
Congratulations to Cathryn Sophia, owner Cash is King, breeder Robert Manfuso, trainer John Servis, jockey Javier Castellano and the rest of the filly's connections. The Slew Crew wishes you continued success.
